stareaway is markus guentner from regensburg, of kompakt- and ware-fame, and heiko badje from hamburg, the man behind saudade-driven pop-band la grande illusion. exploring the possibilities of combining guentners critically acclaimed adventures in ambient scapes and badjes melodies and distinctive singing, their track baghira, as an early result, was selected on kompakts pop ambient 6 compilation in 2005.

disco bloodbath recordings latest is the debut solo release from one of the founders and original residents of the disco bloodbath clubnights, dan beaumont - formally of production duo jam factory and the man behind london venues dalston superstore and the newly opened dance tunnel. reality checkpoint is an atmospheric mid-tempo house chugger based around judicious use of samples and a slight dub-reggae sensibility to the groove. the original is accompanied by two alternate versions - one from neville watson, which pushes the track into club territory, and one from dan himself, which strips things back, further accentuating the tracks dub overtones.

after sides from matthew burton, seuil and albert schwartz, sammy dees ultrastretch label returns in 2013 with volkan akin. a regular presence at berlin institutions like club der visionäre, akin has been slowly rolling out his brand of prickly, spaced-out club tracks since the end of the last decade, both under his own name and as v for volkan. but if volkan akin has up until now been unfamiliar beyond germany, his ultrastretch debut, voltage, featuring an absolute beast of a ricardo villalobos remix, stands to turn more than a few heads in his direction. densely packed and intricately constructed, voltage is an extended groove you can get lost in. cymbals ring softly amidst whirrs of faintly melodic clicks, scratches and voices. but at the center of akins churning, percussive arrangement lies a warm and weighty kick sure to keep dancers pinned to the floor. like so many great perlon records, voltage can be taken as a deeply considered exercise in sound design or as a deadly club track simultaneously, with akins musical sophistication and knack for an inviting beat working hand-in-hand. the original mix spends over 11 minutes unraveling, but as you fall further into the swirl of akins interlocking rhythms, youre likely to stop counting. a shorter constant voltage mix evokes sunrise, pulling back the originals heft to reveal gorgeous pads and hints of organic rhythm. ricardo villalobos, sammys longtime label mate at perlon and a producer who likely needs no introduction, digs deeper into the thump at the heart of voltage on his acdc remix. focusing on the originals wisps of melody, villalobos turns in a warm, zoned-in remix that feels of a piece with the singular techno trips found on his recent lp dependent and happy

with local talk release no. 30 we are moving further into territories of straight up no fuss dance floor action. already having releases on dirt crew recordings, murmur & hypercolour elef knows a thing or two about delivering jacking tracks. wake up call comes in two versions. the original version is a kick & snare pattern driven monster track with heavy arpeggios and deep pads. on the flip brennan green doesnt hold back either. the main melodic pattern together with percussions is unleashed straight on and as the tracks evolves he adds tr-303 lines making the track even more epic. as elef described the remix as perfect for a panorama bar set. the remix is worthy enough based on that one side alone.

ever since stephen sharp and roc jiménez de cisneros embarked on the deconstructive process they refer to as rave synthesis, the goal was to come up with odd relatives of well established sounds in techno culture by constantly messing with the original recipes, expanding the tropes, and hinting at novel paths for contemporary psychedelia. almost three years after the influential rave slime, their fifth long player takes the idea one step further.

mr. oleg poliakov joins the phonogramme team. also known for his releases under the skat moniker, olegs early production career was built on creating beats for hip-hop mcs and lending his studio skills to rappers. switching to radio production, he went onto to work with french national stations, further enhancing his technical skills. it was at this time his began to explore electronic music as a composer. with a sound that strays from specifics, he looks to create his own compositions using a subtle combo of all electronic worlds. his early releases on labels including karat and sthlmaudio won him acclaim, but it is his releases for circus company that have really put him on the map.

the coombes debut ep is an astonishingly graceful and multifaceted creature that effortlessly synthesizes psych rock, minimal folk and electronica.the coombe began as a soundtrack collaboration between karen sharkey and samuel de la rosa (led er est) for some animated short films karen was producing while living in queens, ny. after their move to texas in 2012, further experimenting resulted in longer songs, noise suites, and field recordings that later would represent the essence of this ep. born and in part recorded in the desert, the coombe is comprised of six mesmerizing gems that provide a rarefied glimpse into a touching and liquid soundscape. these are songs for the enamored.

currently two of the busiest men in contemporary deep house, alex agore and james johnston have still found the time to establish their joint no matter what recordings as a potent outlet. this sixth release sees johnston at the buttons for sole control after a couple of split releases and the consumer ep demonstrates a further refinement of his own distinct brand of house music. arriving on transparent vinyl, lead track give him prozac sets the tone with a thick four note synth lead that accrues all manner of dreamlike analogue qualities as it progresses backed by those crisp rolling rhythms johnston is known for. columbo likes the nightlife takes things on a notably deeper path, all dubby chords and intricate skipping percussive touches augmented by epic sweeping textures, whilst face down and they had cocktails maintains the same feel if upping the pace somewhat. johnston ends strongly with the sublime analogue build of the sleepwalker.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. axel boman and petter nordkvist of swedens studio barnhus momentarily shine a mirror ball onto their usual punch-drunk house for their debut release as man tear. a collaboration with vocalist j. jonason, outside amore is a trilling slab of spacious disco, the loping drums and chiming synthesizer accents pirouetting in tandem with jonasons tremulous delivery. the yearning vox of the original are kinetic on their own, but the dub further accosts jonason with all manner of interplanetary commotion and shards of tambourine.

after the huge success that was ak101 – the ghetto, suonho is back with two tracks to further the series, 74 & 77. this release has been a long time in the making, but suonho is firmly back in his ghetto vibe! killer!

the first release on project squared in a year, *make your mess* is a three track ep by melbournes craig mcwhinney. craig has been making music for years and releasing since the late 2000s on melbourne labels such as pinksilver, melbourne deepcast and his own haul music, also on labels based further afield such as brendon moellers steadfast and speedy js electric deluxe. craigs music is techno, but it isnt preoccupied with the 4/4, employing broken, swung and rolling drum patterns. his tracks often include melodic and harmonic elements and effects reminiscent of dub techno but without conforming to the pastiche template of the sub-genre. the make your mess ep is composed of the core title track and two additional tracks that arose as interpretations and variations on the initial production: *provocation is an excuse* is more furious and loud, *disengage* is more restrained. all three are around 125 bpm and were produced in the space of a month between september and october 2012.

greek native john dimas is fast becoming highly respected in the house game and his living lies ep on la vie en rose, an excellent cross-section of the different styles and vibes of house music, should help to further cement that reputation.

saveds second release for 2013 comes from label debutant julien chaptal who presents the 2 track *illin ep*.
fist up on the a side is *eat ya foe*, a track which is built on unique percussion that possesses a warm bit crush effect. these foundations support the bouncing bassline which has an acid feel to it that works well against the potent vocals.
further damage is caused on the flip with *illin* where the rolling drums build nicely into the engaging lead line that advances through the track with filters and variations.

manchesters hudd traxx imprint kicks off 2013 with a bang bringing you the omatsuri ep this january, a collaborative effort from spaniards javi bora and le vinyl.
